I would like to remind everyone that next Sunday, September 17, 1-5 p.m.we will have our regular meeting and workshop which will be held at PARADIGM GARDENS, 8949 J St., Omaha (877-526-8481).
Kicking off the meeting will be a 30-minute or so seminar on styling ginkgo bonsai, presented by Jerry Harder and Max Miller. Jerry is a new member who has a lot of knowledge about growing and styling ginkgos. They will focus on a ginkgo Max has been growing and training for 6 years with the intent to develop it as a flame-style bonsai.
Jerry will talk a little about the flame style and other styles that are suitable for ginkgos. He will then discuss possible approaches that he sees for future training of this tree. He will also share some basic ideas about pruning and wiring ginkgos and some of the specific oddities of how ginkgos grow. This will be a great opportunity to learn some basics of ginkgo styling and pick up some tips on growing ginkgos.
This will be followed by an opportunity to sign up for the fall show and for our usual mentoring / work session.
The excitement is building regarding our upcoming fall show: October 7&8 (set up Oct. 6) at Lauritzen Gardens’ Japanese Ambiance Festival.
It would be great if each member would consider an entry of some kind. We will be covering a lot of information at the September meeting, so please try and attend. If you have a plant you are considering and it is not too large, bring it to the meeting and get some pointers. In Lincoln last month, I had what I thought was a healthy plant only to find it had a small problem. One of the things that makes a great club is working together and trading ideas – and we certainly have that. So look over your collection and see “who you would like to take to the dance” and let’s have another fantastic show.
As mentioned in a recent email from Dennis Wilson, our show chair, we also will be having a sale table if you have anything to sell.
We are also currently looking for volunteers to staff both the table and the show space. So please sign up if you would like to participate!
Join us at the meeting this week to learn more about exciting new opportunities that will be available to club members.
